Dear...

Dear SM

I really need to get this off my mind and I don’t know any other way apart from writing a letter to your company (though it’ll never reach.) Firstly, I must introduce myself as an ELF who has taken interest into kpop since 2008. Being an ELF, naturally this is somewhat like a letter of complaint with regards to how you are treating Super Junior. This letter will be long but bear with me. Of course not everything is bad, so I would like to acknowledge some success that you have when it comes to Super Junior.

Firstly, I don’t know why you created Super Junior instead of sticking to the original groups you planned to debut but I must say that is it was the right decision looking at Super Junior’s successes now. Just to name a few, they have their own talk show (Foresight), their own radio show (Kiss the Radio, their own mini movie (Flower Boys) and their world tour (Super Show 1,2,3,4). There are countless many other successes of course though in my opinion,  the best success is the establishment of everlasting friends. For making it possible, thank you.

However, the part that I am not too happy about it the fact that you only focused on them when they were rising idols. I understand that you have other groups to look after but I can’t help but feel as though you have completely ignored them now. I know, you know, we all know that ELFs will be there to support Super Junior no matter what but I feel that you should give them a bit more attention. More specifically, they should be given much better music videos/songs/dance.

Again, before I dive into what I find a bit off when it comes to SJ’s songs, I would like to acknowledge the efforts made for the previous albums. Although the first 3 albums had some…problems (I don’t really know how to put it) I believe that I preferred the first 3 albums to the 4th and 5th album. I am sure some elfs would beg to differ but just hear me out first.

The thing that I liked about the first 3 albums is that they fully utilised SJ’s size. The choreography that they have was clearly choreographed for SJ’s numbers only. You simply can’t do the choreography with only 5 people or less. The music videos that SJ had was of them out in the streets (I take it that ‘Its You’ will pass for being out in the streets).

There was also a good mix of singing and rapping which I really like. In addition, though Don’t Don was probably the most controversial era, you must agree that it was cool to have Henry featured. Honestly, how many idols can play the violin like Henry? SJ-H and SJ Trot was also quite popular with songs such as cooking-cooking and Rokuggo :) Essentially, Super Junior was really maximising their potential.

Then came the 3rd album. Again, it was a fantastic album. Fresh, cool concept. Awesome album with a good mix of songs, some of which were written by SJ themselves. I really liked the song they did with DBSK too :) The dance for the chorus was simple so everyone could follow however the other parts were really cool and looked difficult to learn. As for the 4th and 5th album, I felt was trying to imitate the success of the 3rd album. :/

My friend told me it was part of ‘SJ Funky’ concept which was expected to end with the 5th album. Even with the same concept, I felt that you could have done a much better job.

1. MVs

You could have done much more with Boom Boom or even Superman considering the teaser photos that you had for the repackaged album. Furthermore, you could have done more with Oppa Oppa rather than just leaving it at that (it is a short mv. does anyone know if there’s a long one? Are they even going to release a long version?) Oh and one more thing: Why on earth are they ALWAYS TRAPPED IN A BOX. Sorry Sorry, Bonamana, Mr Simple, Perfection, Super Girl, Acha, Opera (Jap version). Am I the only one who feels this way???

2. Dance

I will make the assumption here that you want the dance to be easy enough for fans to follow. However, I find that now the choreography is just making use of Super Junior’s placements rather than their ability. I agree that the chorus should probably be easy to follow however it seems like the entire choreography is easy. Plus, it’s getting predictable with Eunhyuk’s solo. Don’t get me wrong, I like his solos…just don’t make it so predictable. I can’t help but compare the choreography of SJ’s songs to Keep Your Head Down, Lucifer, History and Mama. SJ’s dance just looks too simplistic in comparison.

3. Song

I don’t know if it’s just me but its a tad too auto-tuned. I would also appreciate it if there were equal distribution of lines. I understand that KRY are lead singers but the other members can sing too. Oh and even if KRY are lead singers, I find that they somehow don’t get enough attention. As in, come on, at first glance when watching Acha or when you listen to it, you can’t tell that Ryeowook had a super long note whereas in Lucifer, everyone knows of Jonghyun’s long note. (Shawols, I have nothing against SHINee.)

Actually there’s a lot more but I can’t find specific categories for it. Essentially, Super Junior is really really talented but I’m sad that it’s not reflected in their songs/MV/dance. All I am asking is that you maximise their potential. I feel as though you have forgotten what SJ can do when you’re focused on Exo. We have our own martial arts boy Sungmin (and Hankyung :( ) and everyone in SJ can dance really well! In fact, I think that the one thing that sets SJ apart from other groups is that they can incorporate humour into their dance and yet still look pretty awesome. Make use of SJ-H and SJ-T too. Don’t completely abandon them. Choreograph some super sophisticated dance for them or something. Yes of course SJ showcases their talents during their concerts but I find it is only right for them to reflect it in their songs as well.

I suppose many will wonder why I am suddenly writing this. I have been keeping these thoughts to myself for quite some time but I gave benefit of doubt that you have a lot of groups to look after however after looking at the many teaser MVs of EXO and Mama MV which uses a lot of special effects, I find that it is not justified to leave SJ ‘trapped in a box’. I have nothing against EXO, trust me, it’s just that, I believe SJ deserves to have a bit more attention and budget. I’m sure that other fandoms have other complaints about how you aren’t treating their bias groups well but again, I am an ELF, not a fan of f(x) or SNSD or SHINee so I don’t really know the full story.

To end off, I really hope that you give more support to SJ and may the 6th album be much better than the 4th and 5th.

Regards,

an everlasting friend

ps: I am NOT speaking on behalf of the entire fandom or anything. It is just my opinion so please don’t bash the elf community or anything just cause of what I said. Though I really wonder though if anyone else out there shares the same opinion as me.

Dear Gary and jihyo,

I really really wish that Monday couple was real! You two made such a cute and funny couple on running man… If only you two were a couple irl. Too bad jihyo has a boyfriend now, but maybe she’ll come to realize that the one she loves most is kang Gary :p

Dear Jaejoong

I know you’re in denial that you’re aging but please know that we will not love you any less just because you’re older. Its probably hard to say that you’re aging gracefully with the amount of alcohol you consume but you still look pretty healthy to me. I guess this isn’t the typical birthday wish you normally get but I just need to say it. What I wanted to say is, thank you for being born into this world. Thank you for making my life more liveable (if there’s such a word). Thank you for all the beautiful songs you’ve composed. Thank you for helping me keep the faith in DB5K. Thank you for brightening my day with your smile. I hope you have a good birthday and I really hope that your relationship with Yunho and Changmin is still as good as it was back then when DB5K was active.

Happy Birthday Kim Jaejoong. :)

to T-ARA,

your songs are really very catchy, but i think you cannot sing live at all. every time i see one of your concert performances or music show perfs on tv, i listen very closely and manage to hear you struggling. the track with your voices in it is being played louder than the volume of your mic. you have some good singers among you, but the rest seriously need to do something about their live singing skills.

just watch this video and you’ll get what i mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5VNNbowne0.

dear exo,

i can’t wait for your debut! everyone’s so hyped up and i am too :) i don’t think ELFs should be worried about you overthrowing super junior, because if super junior really has good music and a strong fandom then nothing will change. you won’t be stealing fans from other groups, but rather have your fandom, exo planet! can’t wait for your debut stage on mubank on friday :D

and also PLEASE TELL ME JINO IS IN EXO-K!

love,

a fan.

Dear SM Ent

As you should know since a long time ago, many fans hate you. You as in the whole company and not just the person on top. I really don’t understand how you can debut such awesome groups yet treat them in such a manner. DB5K once mentioned that Lee Soo Man was very nice to them. Super Junior did too. I know there’s a change in management down the road so I don’t really know who’s running the show at this point but whoever you are, I think you should seriously focus on getting your company straightened out and not on debuting a new group because that would only add on to the list of screw ups you’ve made thus far.

Who knows, maybe we’re wrong about you treating your artistes like crap. Maybe you really do try but you just have too many groups to handle. Or maybe we are right all the while and you care nothing about your artistes but the money you make. Whatever it is, thank you. Thank you for debuting such awesome groups thus far. Thank you for screwing up because it only strengthens the bonds within and among fandoms. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that it was right of you to screw up, I’m just saying that you better watch out because of the strengthened bonds and understanding

Dear Eunhyuk and Leeteuk,

Today’s your last day as DJs on sukira, and it’s just sad, and now everyone’s crying along with you :( Teukie was being the amazing leader he always is, staying strong and holding his tears back. Eunhyuk just cried and sniffed his way through the last ten minutes, and i’m so so so glad when donghae came out at the end to comfort him.

Eunteuk, it’s not the end. it’s the and.

Dear Changmin

You give really poor fan service. You’re blunt and honest to the point that it seems as though you’re being really mean to your fans. You insult Jaejoong for smiling too much to the fans. You don’t like hugs and you scold your fans who think you are handsome. What is wrong with you?? Then again, what is wrong with me?? I actually feel drawn towards you though you make no effort to win over fans.0_0

Am I the only one who feels this way?
